Every Thursday The PRESS Project will share a link to stories that have summarized the challenges and promises faced by parents choosing schools for their child/children.

Today’s post comes from Brandy Williams, a freelance writer and mom who wrote a 2011 piece for the Huffington Post titled “How the Education System Fails Underprivileged Students”.

The post presented a parent’s perspective on the perpetuation of deficit constructs in urban education.  In other words, she explores why many teachers, principals, and education professionals continue to think children raised in the poorest neighborhoods cannot be as successful as wealthier students in resource-rich communities.
